Bill of lading

In short

The sea transport document: receipt for the goods, evidence of the contract of carriage, and a document of title.

Updated 16 August 2026

An original bill of lading must be surrendered to release the cargo unless a telex release or seaway bill is used. Errors in the consignee field cause release delays and can complicate the customs declaration.

This is general information, not advice for a specific shipment. Rules change; check the official source or ask us about your consignment.
