A lighting importer who nearly paid an anti-dumping duty

In short

An importer of decorative lighting was about to order from a producer whose goods carried a product-specific anti-dumping measure. The check took ten minutes before the order and changed the supplier, not the shipment.

The problem

The quoted landed cost assumed the standard tariff rate for the commodity code.

What we did

We checked the TARIC measure against both the code and the named producer before the deposit was paid.

The result

A different producer of the same product was outside the measure. The order moved; the duty did not apply.

What we would do differently

Nothing, except run the check at the quoting stage by default, which we now do for every new commodity.
